New to the market is this 1963 Palmer & Krisel-designed
home built by Paradise Homes in Paradise Palms in Las Vegas,
Nevada. This home has been expanded over time from approximately 1,350 original
square feet to 1,820 square feet with two separate additions and includes three
bedrooms and two bathrooms, an (empty) in-ground pool and sits on a 10,800
square-foot lot and carries an asking price of $205,000.
Front of home |
The home sits on a large corner lot with north-south
orientation. The home maintains its
well-worn original exterior lines, and original checkerboard blockwork is still
intact on the two-car carport. The front yard consists of worn earth, parking
strips and a mature eucalyptus tree and palms. An undulating scored midcentury concrete
block wall separates the corner side yard from the backyard, and board and
batten siding matching that found originally on the exterior of the home
conceals an addition off of the master bedroom.
Original rendering and floor plan |
Inside the home, the living and dining rooms sit at the rear
of the home, while the expanded master bedroom and kitchen sit towards the
front. A second addition on the rear of the home provides an additional separated
family room with fireplace.
Kitchen |
Dining room |
The kitchen features cabinetry that appears to be
near-original, mixed with a variety of black and white appliances. The form has
been modified slightly from original, with the doorway between the entry and
kitchen being sealed off and the floating counter between the kitchen and
dining room being removed. The original
clerestory windows appear to have been drywalled over on the inside, and simply
painted over on the outside, making restoration a great possibility. The room
is fully open to the rear-facing dining room which overlooks the backyard and
swimming pool through floor-to-ceiling windows and clerestories.
Living room |
Family room addition |
The living room is open to the dining room, and is anchored
by Krisel’s signature modernist fireplace. The original blockwork has at some
point over the years been recovered in stonework, and luckily still retains its
distinct linear form. The family room addition sits off the living room,
entered through the former sliding glass door opening, and contains a second
stone-covered fireplace.
Master bedroom |
The master bedrooms sits off the entry hall, and maintains its
original uncovered clerestories and original vaulted ceilings. A wide,
flat-roofed addition sits off the master bedroom accessed through an arched
opening, and a wall-mounted air conditioner sits midway on the southern wall of
the room.
Hallway and built-ins |
Secondary bedroom |
Secondary bedroom |
The secondary bedrooms are split from the master, and both
rooms appear to be in their original configurations. There are no photos provided
of the neither bathrooms, nor are there any of the backyard, but Google Maps
tells us that there’s a decent-sized curvilinear swimming pool in the north-facing
backyard. The backyard has less living landscape than the front yard, and
appears to be a blank slate.
This home offers an incredible opportunity for those looking
to put their own stamp on a midcentury renovation or restoration project, and
holds unlimited potential for those with vision.
