Historic-Designated Palmer & Krisel in Tamarisk Ranchos For Sale – Rancho Mirage, CA

This neighborhood has been right under our noses for years but for some reason we only found out about its existence a couple of weeks ago.  The Tamarisk Ranchos are an enclave of 16 single-family homes surrounding a common swimming pool area in Rancho Mirage, CA. The homes were built in 1958 and are listed on the Rancho Mirage Register of Historic Places. This particular 1958 home includes three bedrooms, two-and-three-quarters baths in 2,554 square feet and a two-car carport all on a 8,200 square-foot lot with an asking price of $529,000 and monthly HOA dues of $495.

This low-pitch roofed home exudes more of a Rancho Mirage look than a midcentury Palm Springs look, incorporating more sand and beige tones along with more traditional desert furnishings and detailings. The living room is fully mirrored, including the fireplace surround, but under those mirrors is a classic William Krisel open corner fireplace surrounded by a generous proportional hearth. The ceiling throughout the home are open beamed, and there’s skylights in the living room, dining room and den.

Living Room

Look closely - there's a signature Krisel-modernist fireplace under all those mirrors

Mirrored Dining Room

The dining area carries the mirrored theme forward, and sits opposite the living room. The kitchen has been redone, and reads more traditional than midcentury modern. The cabinets feature raised panel doors and feature rich wood tones, while the counters are granite, which to many look outdated now as granite became overused by flippers and do-it-yourselfers over the past 15 years.

Sunroom/Nook

The bedrooms show light and bright, as Krisel’s style almost always included well naturally-lit bedrooms through floor-to-ceiling windows, secondary shoulder-height windows and feature those signature open beamed ceilings. Two of the bedrooms are currently used as bedrooms, while one has been converted to a den, and features another bedroom/den constructed out of the original former carport accessed through the current den.

There’s one gem of originality in the master bath – the original pink American Standard sink, marble counter and vanity are all still in place.  The tub also appears to be original while all other details have been updated out of the bathroom. The other bathrooms have been fully updated at some point, and now read somewhat inconsistent with the style of the home.

Former carport/den addition

One of the fascinating details about this community is that there are no backyard walls, no divisions between properties, giving the rear yard area an expansive, park-like feel. Even without walls, there is privacy created through the use of hedges, both at the front yard property lines and at the rear patio.

This 1958 classic is move-in ready, and can be enjoyed as-is or enhanced with a full-on restoration to bring it back to its original modernist roots. Either way it’s a pretty great residence in a serene, quiet Coachella Valley neighborhood, and definitely worth a look.
